Grooming
Like many breeds, an English Springer's coat requires regular grooming to keep it in good condition. Most basic grooming techniques can be easily learned with a minimum of tools required to keep your Springer looking good.

It is important that you get your puppy used to being handled and groomed from an early age as this will pay dividends when you need to visit a vet or groomer later on. Your breeder will no doubt have started before the puppy left them, by keeping nails short and ears clean.

As you will have seen, the show type Springer is quite a lot hairier than its working cousin but its also important to remember that even the beautiful and glamorous show dogs do not look like that 100% of the time. They too get dirty and have lives that involve running in woods and swimming. They also get knots and tangles in their coats. However, regular grooming sessions make it much easier to keep on top of any coat issues and helps to keep knots at bay.

Many pet dogs are clipped off for ease although it is worth considering that once a coat has been clipped, it is unlikely to ever return to the silky, soft texture it once was, and tends to become thicker and woolier as a result.

Below are suggested items that would make up a decent grooming kit. These tools will allow you to keep your Springer looking the part! Please get in touch if you need any further advice on where to buy these items or how to use them. Failing that, please also have a look at the grooming diagram below for assistance as well as the two videos further down the page - the first demonstrates the grooming required for a show dog and the second, typical grooming for a pet dog.
