What are the differences between
show-bred and working-bred Springers?
Show-bred and working-bred English Springer Spaniels are one and the same breed but it is fair to say that the two types are very different physically, genetically and in temperament. Understandably working breeders very much focus on working ability when selecting dogs for breeding, while the show breeders look far more to the Breed Standard and in breeding for the conformation and temperament described therein.

Generally, the show-bred English Springer is larger with stronger bone whereas the working dog is usually smaller with shorter legs and is finer in bone. Heads are also very different with working dogs having flatter skulls and higher set ears. Perhaps the biggest differences are in temperament and this is an important distinction to consider when looking for a puppy. The show-bred dog is invariably calmer and can often make a much more suitable family pet than a worker that is bred to work and for that reason, can possess far higher activity levels
